The Church School program goal is to meet the needs of each child and age group of the program with love, safety, and Unitarian Universalist vision. The program allows for structured and unstructured time for the children. The unstructured time allows the children to bond socially and have fun. This builds a sense of community and belonging. The intent is to offer children a solid sense of connections to something bigger than themselves.
The object of this program is to introduce Unitarian Universalist principles and identity using art, song, and drama as the pedagogy. Affirmation is a time when church school participants are able to clearly articulate and understand their Unitarian Universalist principles. Often this happens around age seven, completing the curricula Simply Sevens! Older children, fourth grade and up, continue with Unitarian Universalist identity and values, with this age group partnering world religion trough a deeper connection with the Six Sources. This culminates with Coming of Age. Our Whole Lives, or OWL, is a dynamic sexuality training which is also periodically offered under the umbrella of Children’s Religious Education.
The children give service back to the community in different ways. One way is to bake cookies for coffee hour. Another example was the children’s participation in National Service Day at Arlington Street Church. The children managed the cutting and folding of fleece scarves to be distributed to the city’s homeless. Church School also sponsors two events per year, a special family service for Christmas Eve with a unique pageant for children, and the Easter Eggstravaganza, a high tea and egg hunt on Easter.
Children’s Religious Education is an intergenerational collaboration, inspired by the ministry of Rev. Kim K. Crawford Harvie and directed by the Children’s Religious Education Committee. Programming is implemented by a professional religious educator under the supervision of our ministerial team. The committee is made up of parents, friends, and those interested in the spiritual development of children and meets monthly. Please refer to the calendar on this website! All meetings are open and all are welcome.
We invite you to join us any time that is convenient for you and welcome your questions about our open house or programs. For more information, contact religious educator Laura Evonne Steinman, care of office@ascboston.org.
What We Believe
We are Unitarian Universalists.
This is the church of the
open mind.
This is the church of the flaming chalice that lights our way to truth.
This is the church of the
loving heart.
This is the church of the
helping hands.
Together we care for our earth and work for peace in our world.
One, each person is worthwhile
Two, be kind in all you do
Three, we help each other learn
Four, in search for what is true
Five, all people have a say
Six, work for a peaceful world
Seven, the web of life’s the way
That will bring us back to
Me & UU!
