Shakespeare's tragedies

Professor Alan Helms will be on hand to lead us through six of Shakespeare's tragedies. Any text will do, as long as it has numbered acts, scenes, and lines. We will be reading the plays in what most people think is the chronological order of composition. The plays may be read online, links are provided below.

January 14th: Hamlet
February 4th: Othello
February 11th:King Lear
February 18th: Macbeth
February 25th: Antony and Cleopatra
March 25th: for this final meeting of the Shakespeare seminar, please join us to watch a DVD of Ian McKellen and Judy Dench in "Macbeth."

We will be using the Modern Library's Selected Poetry of W.H. Auden although any text of Auden's poetry will do. All are welcome!

For December 3, please read "Ganymede" also titled "Sonnets from China IX"; "The Surgical Ward" also titled "Sonnets from China XIV"; "The Sphinx"; "Rimbaud"; "Song of the Master Boatswain"; and "Shield of Achilles."

 

For November 12, please read "Chorus"; "One Evening"; Lullaby"; Roman Wall Blues"; Miss Gee. A Ballad"; Victor. A Ballad"; Musee des Beaux Arts"; and "Law Like Love."

Our text is "The Collected Poems of W. B. Yeats: Definitive Edition, With the Author's Final Revisions" (Macmillan, 1956 & many printings thereafter), but most poems can be found online.

For September 17th, read An Irish Airman Foresees His Death, The Second Coming, A Prayer for My Daughter, To Be Carved on a Stone at Thoor Ballylee, Leda and the Swan, Sailing to Byzantium, and Among School Children.

For September 24th, read In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markievicz, Byzantium, Crazy Jane Talks with the Bishop, Lapis Lazuli, Long-Legged Fly, Under Ben Bulben, and The Circus Animals Desertion.
