Notes from last week

Last week our subject was the abundant miracle of life; tonight, it's loss.
And to get us going, here's a poem about a very familiar kind of loss,
the loss of ourselves:

AT THE DESK

             I spent the entire day in official details;
             And it almost pulled me down like the others:
             I felt that tiny insane voluptuousness,
             Getting this done, finally finishing that.
                         --Theodor Storm,
                         translated by Robert Bly
